Why Voice Over artists need to become an audio engineer nowadays
Otherwise you will be left out
Voice-over work is highly rewarding for those who can make it. But it is no longer just voice acting.
In the Analog days, you only needed voice acting skills to be successful. However, after the explosion of digital tools and digital audio, that is no longer the case.
You need to produce high-quality audio yourself with proper acting skills. Even if you have the best voice in the world, if you fail to create high-quality audio, you will not succeed.
So why did this shift occur? It is important to understand that if you are into professional voice-over.
In the Analog days, studio quality was possible only in professional studios. The complex step was not possible in our homes, and it was pretty expensive.
Just imagine some hardware compressors would cost $30k - $40k. So, the voice-over industry was only limited to professional companies.
Any company that needed a voice-over would have to get it from those studios. But that is not the case today.
Any random person can order a voice-over work from any random person. You do not need a $30k hardware compressor anymore.
You can do the same thing even with free software with just some clicks. You do not need an expensive studio setup.
If you can hang some blankets around your recording space, no one can even tell if it was recorded at home or in an expensive studio.
So, voice-over production has transformed from costly and rare to affordable and accessible to anyone.
As everything has become so accessible, it is expected that you can do all the work related to voice-over work.
You do not need to be hired by a professional studio to do voice-over work; anyone can hire you now.
It has become a norm that a voice-over artist will be able to produce top-quality work. If a voice-over artist fails to do that, he is deemed as not qualified enough.
However, that is not the case, and you can’t get more jobs by winning that argument. The only way to win now is to produce top-quality work.
Some people think they need to become audio engineers to produce high-quality audio. This is not the case.
An audio engineer must know that there are four different kinds of compressors, whereas a voice-over artist only needs to know how to configure the compressor of his software for his voice recording.
People who realize this truth and invest enough time and effort to become good enough in audio editing move ahead fast in this digital arena.
As I always said, you can take full responsibility for learning yourself or hire someone to make you good enough.
Hiring an expert to make you good enough has some benefits.
You will learn things fast
You will get feedback if you are doing something wrong
You will learn the necessary things, thus saving time
You will increase your chance of success as you learn the necessary skills
