What role does Audio Editing actually play in your success

Part 3 - Professional Sound Series

What is the actual role of audio editing in professional-quality audio? If you are not getting professional audio, you are going nowhere.

That is a prerequisite for success in voice-over or audiobook narration.

But is it possible to make any audio sound professional by relying on audio editing?

Or is audio editing hyped, and should we focus elsewhere?

The answer depends on a simple understanding of the trio: the recording room, microphone, and audio editing technique.

Imagine recording in a noisy place with a room full of sound reflections. It does not matter how good your microphone is or what kind of audio processing you are capable of.

You will not get anywhere near professional-quality audio. On the other hand, let's say you are recording in the world’s most expensive studio, where top-chart songs are recorded.

But you recorded with your laptop’s microphone. Once again, the most famous audio engineer won’t be able to get professional-quality audio from it.

In another scenario, you recorded in a perfect room with a top-quality microphone. But you know nothing about audio processing.

Once again, you can’t progress. Sometimes, people take too much time to understand the importance of the trio I mentioned earlier in the post.

The sooner you realize this, the better chance you have of success.

Now, how much audio editing should you learn for professional-grade audio? Because the learning curve looks endless.

Well, you only need to focus on 4 audio effects at the beginning:

  1. Normalize

  2. Noise Reduction

  3. Compressor

  4. EQ

Different audio editing software may have different names for those, but the principle is the same.

In my Premium Consulting, I get some jaw-dropping moments from my clients. Most of the time, it happens when I show them the proper application of the above 4 effects.

If you learn those 4 effects well, you will have a solid foundation for audio editing, and you will see other things fall into place.

There are plenty of resources online to learn those 4 effects at a deeper level. To start, you can watch my Sound Better videos thoroughly.

You may wonder why those 4 effects are so powerful. That’s mainly because they either fix the problems we have in our recording or give us feedback that we have some unfixable issues in the recording.

What do you do with the feedback on the unfixable issue? You fix your room or microphone or recording technique when you get feedback that you have unfixable issue.

So, you see, audio editing has two roles. It can either give you the final professional-grade audio you are looking for or tell you that you need some more work.

If you do not get good enough for audio editing, you will hurt your chances a big time. On the other hand, when you know what audio editing can exactly do for you, you will be confident and have a better chance of success.

Not learning those well can not be an excuse nowadays. Because there are tons of free resources for them as well as tons of paid guided resources.

If you are looking for private and guided learning options, I have 2 things for you:
