🎙️ The #5 Key to Clean, Professional Audio: Proper Recording and Mic Technique - The Basics and Beyond

Let’s talk about proper recording and microphone technique—because how you speak into the mic makes a huge difference in your sound quality.

Start with the Basics

Before diving into advanced techniques, it's important to get the fundamentals right:

  • Mic Direction: Always speak into the front (or active side) of the microphone. Talking on the wrong side will give you a horrible or not up-to-the-mark recording.

  • Distance: A good starting point is 6 to 8 inches away from the mic. For deeper, bass-heavy voices or if you want more proximity effect (that rich, full sound), you might get a bit closer.

  • Avoiding Noise: Speaking too close can create plosive sounds like "p" and "b" pops, which are hard to remove later. On the flip side, speaking too far away might cause your voice to sound thin and pick up more room noise or echo. You have to find the proper balance.

Moving to Advanced Techniques

Once you’ve mastered the basics, start experimenting with more advanced mic placement ideas:

  • Mic Angle: Slightly angling the mic or your mouth can reduce plosives and sibilance (harsh "s" sounds).

  • Height & Position: Try positioning the mic slightly above or below your mouth to see what sounds best.

  • Room Placement: The location of your mic in the room matters. Test different spots on your desk or in the room to find where it captures the cleanest, most natural sound.

Consistency is Key (Especially for Audiobooks)

If you're recording something like an audiobook, it’s crucial to maintain a consistent tone across chapters. To achieve that:

  • Keep your mic in the same position, angle, and distance every session.

  • Take a photo or note your setup—mic placement, height, distance—so you can replicate it each time.
