I have analysed over 1000 of recording sample in my audio engineering career and a BIG problem is very common.

It is the recording level …

Yes, it sounds very basic but it is preventing most people to their voice over success

This problem has no relation with the microphone quality. I have seen the issue both in low budget and expensive microphones.

In fact, if you don’t know how to achieve correct recording level, it does not matter which microphone do you use.

You will always make the same mistake. But how costly is this mistake?

Well, it is difficult to measure in $, but let’s see what are the issues you have to deal with:

  • Audio processing becomes tricky, audio engineer level skill required to fix

  • Clipping and distortions become non-fixable

  • Obvious background noise issues overlooked, had to record again

  • Mouth clicks, lip smacks or mouth noises was hidden, only revealed after final processing

  • Room-echo or strong reverb problem hampered the listening quality, non acceptable on many platforms

  • You get wrong idea of audio quality, You think it is smooth and crisp sounding, only to later find out it is harsh and thin sounding
