Dunning-Kruger effect in audio editing makes your growth slow

Victim doesn't know that they are affected

Have you heard about the Dunning-Kruger effect? This effect means people overestimate their ability in a specific area.

This heavily affects people involved in audio editing and sabotages their growth. It affects aspiring and beginner voice-over artists, audiobook narrators, podcasters, content creators, and anyone else involved in voice editing.

How this works:

  1. People learn something

  2. They get good enough skills to do something

  3. They assume they learned everything they need to know

  4. They stop learning

  5. They miss out on opportunities because they are not truly good enough

  6. Due to their incorrect assumption of their ability, they don’t know they are missing out

It mostly affects aspiring voice-over artists who are auditioning for jobs or who already found some success but are not growing fast. They don’t understand their shortcomings, so they do not win auditions or get recommended enough for more jobs.

It affects audiobook narrators or podcasters from a different angle. Your voice doesn’t need much shooting to be heard, but it should give users a smoother listening experience.

If people leave your content in the midway because of a poor listening experience, you are missing out on growth opportunities.

How can you be free from the Dunning-Kruger effect in audio editing? The first step is to have the proper mindset.

You have to think that there is something you don’t know yet. You have to give yourself the chance of better learning.

Once you have overcome the initial recording and editing struggle, your learning capacity and capability will increase. You will now easily understand different concepts easily and fast.

While your next step will depend on your current position, I can offer some generic advice.

  1. Re-visit your previous learning materials. You will find new and different angles of understanding things.

  2. Make a habit of consuming content from relevant sources (YouTube videos, blog articles). If you feel you already know those, it’s fine. Otherwise, you will be introduced to new concepts that will help you grow

  3. Consult with industry experts who already know the craft. Finding the right materials and concepts will take a lot of time if you do it yourself. Consulting can be an excellent way to shorten your search efforts.

I already have some learning materials that can help you in every step of your journey, but in this post, I will recommend Premium Consulting.

Premium Consulting involves six video calls (1-1) via Google Meet or Zoom. Each video call is 1-hour long. It has been the best investment for many who want to learn better and faster.

In Premium consulting, you will fix your own schedule and how frequently you want to take the calls.
