4 Key Reasons Your Voice-Over & Audiobook Work Isn’t Clicking
No other job follows this linear path
If you're struggling to achieve professional-quality results in voice-over or audiobook narration, the issue likely falls into one (or more) of these four categories:
1️⃣ Your voice
2️⃣ Your voice acting
3️⃣ Your recording setup (room + equipment)
4️⃣ Your audio editing skills
To succeed, you need to identify where the problem lies and take steps to fix it. It’s really that simple.
If you believe it's more complicated than that, you either have a major learning gap or are focusing on the wrong things. Let me explain why:
1. Your Voice
Some voices simply aren’t suited for certain types of work—and that’s okay. This is an easy reality to assess. For example, I have a strong subcontinent accent, which means pursuing work as a voice-over artist for an American male role would be unrealistic. No amount of expensive software or technical enhancements will change that.
2. Your Voice Acting
If your delivery isn’t compelling, no amount of technical improvement will fix it. The best way to improve? Work with a professional voice coach. But here’s the tricky part: Many people assume they have an acting problem when, in reality, their audio quality is so poor that no one can even assess their performance properly. Before blaming your acting skills, make sure your audio is at a professional standard.
3. Your Recording Setup
A decent microphone in the $200–$300 range is more than enough for professional-quality audio. However, the real issue often isn’t the mic—it’s the room. Many people don’t realize their recording space has poor acoustics, leading to unwanted reflections and echoes. I’ve seen clients invest in expensive microphones and software while completely overlooking their room setup. The good news? Getting expert feedback on your recording environment is affordable—typically around $200–$300. I provide this service to my Bundle students and Preset clients because it’s a game-changer. If you're unsure about your recording quality, it’s up to you to seek proper evaluation.
4. Your Audio Editing Skills
This is where most people struggle. Many invest heavily in voice coaching but still end up with subpar audio quality—or worse, they don’t even realize their audio quality is already good and waste time improving the wrong thing.
Some try to learn everything from free tutorials. While those are great for getting started, they won’t take you to expert-level mastery. Think about it: Why would a true expert give away all their secrets for free? That said, not all paid courses are high-quality either—some have poor teaching methods. The key is finding one that works for you.
